Chapter 1: Pondering the Meaning of Life
The Weight of the Ink
Trying to shrug off the storm of thoughts in his head, David raised his hand, bringing the cup of tea closer to his lips. Lost in a whirlwind of emotions, his tea had gone cold, and the now tastelessness of the liquid in his favorite cup only aggravated him more.
Disgusted and dejected, David’s existential crisis kicked in, making him question the meaning of life. Suddenly, everything in his life stopped making sense. As he longed for a meaningful relationship with a companion who he could spend forever with, but with each passing moment, and the sound of emptiness filled the living space, making life seem more futile than ever.
Why did it have to be this way?
What did I do to deserve all this?
Why did it have to be me? We could have tried to make it work.
With his mind giving birth to new questions every second, David felt dizzy and lightheaded. Resting his back against the couch, he stared at the ceiling, running his hands over the soft rug beneath him. Despite his efforts to breathe deeply, the nausea failed to go away. His emotions of anger and self-pity bounced back and forth like a game of tennis in his mind.
On one hand, he wanted to get up and smash everything around him; but on the other, something urged him to stay on the floor and break down in tears. Yet neither was possible. He lacked the strength to get up and lash out in fury, and he was too emotionally drained to shed any more tears.
In a state of lifelessness, David shut his eyes. Though the light from the lamp was dim and dreary, the dull rays still seeped through his eyelids and stung his eyes, thus multiplying his discomfort. With one swift move, he forcefully disconnected the lamp from the power connection.
The next thing that bothered him was the multiple dinging sounds of notifications on his phone, which he now turned off, unwilling to maintain any connection with the outside world. With fewer distractions, he found himself in a better space to reflect on what had led to the demise of what he was fighting for to be a happy marriage.
Being a man of faith, his belief in the power of the Lord had been a constant echo throughout his life. Believing in the sanctity of marriage and the promise of a happily ever after was everything that had glued him to his wife all these years, but nothing had gone quite according to plan.
The harder he tried to pull things together, the quicker they had fallen apart. Now, all that was left for David was loneliness, heartache, and a house that would remain empty and dull.
A God-fearing and pious individual, David had always been cautious not to do anything that would put him in a difficult place in the afterlife. One of his ways to avoid the wrath of God was to protect the bond he shared with his wife, Emily, but that effort now felt like a lost cause. Amidst his misery, David sensed his faith fading away.
Apart from his unshakable faith in the Lord, he had grown up to believe that such relationships were meant to last in which both parties put in the effort to make things work. However, as his marriage fell apart, there was nothing more left for David to hold on to, other than the ideas he had grown up with, and that frustrated him even more.
All the beliefs and convictions he had held close to his heart now seemed more idealistic and less realistic. The pain simmering in his heart was not just the pain of a failed marriage. What hurt him more were the broken dreams that would never come true.
In the deafening silence of his house, he could only think about what could have been if things were different and he had done everything in his power to save his marriage. He tried to cover his ears, but it didn’t help. The sound was in his head, haunting him to the core.
All he had ever wanted from life was a soulmate with whom he could go the distance, but it fell apart much quicker than he could ever imagine. Maybe loneliness was his fate, his curse, the only reality of his life. His faith in God was beginning to wane, and he found himself questioning whether God had forsaken him or if this was merely a test of endurance, after which he might expect a reward.
In the process of losing his faith, his mind replayed his final arguments and altercations with Emily like a tape on repeat. He had promised her to give her the best life he could. He had tried his best to be the ideal partner who would partake not only in her happiness but also in her problems. Sadly, he had failed to do any of that.
This creeping sense of guilt and shame drove him crazy. On numerous occasions during the night, he tried to shrug away the thoughts of why his marriage failed. Most regrettably, the harder he tried, the stronger those thoughts got, clenching him and piercing their sharp claws into David’s soul.
Several times, he considered making a fresh start and forgetting the terrible fate he had endured, but each time he failed, sinking deeper into the quicksand of his pain. Deep down, David longed for a new beginning with someone who could truly understand him—someone who could stay by his side and stand the test of time.
Too weak to stand up, David remained on the floor with his eyes shut. In a semi-unconscious state, he lost track of time. Despite his pain and suffering and being on the verge of losing his faith, David somehow managed to hold onto his idea of redemption.
“Dear Lord! Please remove this burden from me. Allow me to find happiness and return me to my faith.”
Speaking with the Lord, David sensed a lightness in his heart. Exhausted, he drifted into the most effortless slumber. Little did he know things were about to change for the better.
After sleeping soundly for a few hours, David felt a faint yet sweet ache in his eyes. Morning light streamed through the window, bathing the room in a warm glow. The brightness of the morning sun suddenly ignited a flame in David’s heart.
He walked toward the balcony—the same balcony where he would surprise his wife upon returning from work. As he opened the sliding glass door, the first wave of crisp, pristine morning breeze crashed against him.
Just as it was possible for the darkness of the night to be replaced by light every morning, it was also possible for David’s sorrow to turn into happiness.
Gazing at the sky above him, he was reminded that every cloud has a silver lining. Emily’s departure was a horrid recollection, but it wasn’t the entirety of his life. He had God on his side.
David realized that God wanted him to work on himself, and work is what David was ready to do. He would seek God’s help at each step and would not repeat the same mistakes all over again.
With this surge of hope inside him, David looked at the sky and thanked the Lord for opening a new path before him. He made a vow to change his approach to life. He felt a sense of peace descend over him—a sign that he wasn’t alone.
The path of God wasn’t the easiest to walk, but it guaranteed eternal happiness and peace, and David was ready to go the distance.
